Microfibre Duvets: Soft, Light and Easy to Look After

Not everyone likes having feathers in their bed. Some people get allergies from them. Some people don't want to use anything from animals. A lot of people just want a blanket they can throw in the washing machine without worrying about it. That's why microfibre is such a good choice.

Our microfibre blankets cost as little as £17.99 and come in different warmth levels from a light 4.5 tog all the way up to a toasty 13.5 tog. You can get them in all the regular UK sizes too. Each blanket has a smooth microfibre cover on the outside and a puffy hollow polyester filling on the inside. This means you get a soft feel when you touch it and cozy warmth when you're under it. They're easy to wash in the machine, they won't give you allergies, and they don't have any feathers or down in them at all.

What Is a Microfibre Duvet?

Microfibre is a human-made fabric made from polyester threads that are way thinner than human hair. When these threads are woven together tightly, the fabric feels really smooth and silky, kind of like fancy cotton with a high thread count. (By the way, people spell it two different ways: microfibre in the UK and microfiber in America, but it's the same material.)

Here's something that confuses a lot of people when they're shopping. On our duvets, microfibre is the outer layer that touches your skin. Inside that outer layer is a fluffy hollow fibre filling. This filling is springy and traps air to keep you warm. So basically, there are two different parts doing two different jobs: the microfibre makes it feel nice against your skin, and the hollow fibre filling keeps the heat in.

You might also hear people talk about a microfibre duvet insert. In the UK, that's just another name for the actual duvet itself—the part that goes inside your duvet cover. It's just a different name for the same thing.

Why Choose a Microfibre Duvet?

It's gentle on sensitive sleepers: With no feather or down inside, it sidesteps one of the most common bedding allergy triggers. Hypoallergenic means less likely to cause a reaction, which isn't quite the same as a medical guarantee.

It's easy to look after: Put it in the machine, dry it on a cool tumble, done. Synthetic fillings also dry far faster than feather, so wash day doesn't take over your weekend.

It's animal-free: If you avoid feather and down for ethical reasons, this is the straightforward choice.

It's good value: You get a soft, warm duvet at a price that sits comfortably below natural fillings. Handy for a spare room, a student bed, or a household that goes through bedding quickly.

It's light: A well-filled microfibre duvet feels airy rather than heavy, so you're not pinned to the mattress on a warm night.

Microfibre vs Hollowfibre: What's the Difference?

In the bigger world of bedding, these two names talk about different ways to make fake filling stuff. Microfibre threads are super tiny. When you pack them together, they feel really soft and fluffy like real down feathers. Hollowfibre threads have a small hole going through the center. This hole catches air, so the filling feels bouncier and a little bit harder. Both are made from polyester, both work great for people with allergies, and both can go right in your washing machine.

Our duvets give you a mix of both types. The microfibre on the outside gives you that smooth, soft feeling. The hollow fibre packed inside gives you puffiness and good warmth without costing too much money. If you'd rather have a cotton-blend outer with the same hollow fibre inside, take a look at our Poly Cotton Duvets. If your priority is a UK-made, channel-stitched hypoallergenic option, Corovin Duvets are worth a look too.

Microfibre vs Feather and Down

Tog measures warmth, and it does so whatever the filling. A 10.5 tog microfibre duvet and a 10.5 tog feather duvet will hold the same amount of heat. The differences are in feel and upkeep.

Natural fillings tend to feel lighter and breathe better, and with proper care they last a long time. Microfibre is easier to wash, kinder to allergies, and cheaper. Neither is the "right" answer for everyone. If you're leaning towards natural, our Goose Feather Duvets and Duck Feather Duvets are the ones to compare against.

Choosing the Right Tog

The range runs from 4.5 tog to 13.5 tog.

The 4.5 tog microfibre duvet is our lightest. It suits warm bedrooms, hot sleepers, and the handful of properly muggy British summer nights.

The 10.5 tog microfibre duvet is the all-rounder. If you're only buying one, start here. It handles spring, autumn and most of winter, and you can add a throw when the temperature really drops.

At 13.5 tog you're into cold-bedroom territory. Think older houses, north-facing rooms, or anyone who feels the cold more than most.

Not sure? Base the decision on the coldest three months of your year rather than an average night. That's where the wrong tog shows up.

Microfibre Duvet Sizes

The same construction runs across the entire range, with each size simply scaled to fit different beds. A Single duvet (135cm x 200cm) is suited to single beds, kids’ rooms and guest rooms. A Double duvet (200cm x 200cm) works well for most couples and shared beds, while a King duvet (230cm x 220cm) is designed for king-size beds or offers a roomier fit on a double. For the largest UK beds, a Super King duvet (260cm x 220cm) provides the most generous coverage.

Always measure your mattress rather than relying on the bed-frame size, as divan bases in particular can be misleading. If you prefer extra coverage, going up one size—such as choosing a King duvet for a Double bed—gives you a generous drape over the sides and can help put an end to the classic night-time tug-of-war. Browse the full range in Super King Size Duvets or the wider Duvet Collection.

Are Microfibre Duvets Good for Allergies?

These are a smart option to pick. Since they don't have feathers or down stuffed inside, someone who's allergic to feathers won't have any problems. That's actually why a lot of people decide to make the switch.

Here's something important to know though: dust mites can show up in any kind of bedding, whether it's made from natural stuff or fake materials. The best thing you can do is wash your bedding a lot and let your duvet get some fresh air sometimes. Wash it using the hottest water temperature that the care tag says is okay. If you're really worried about allergies or asthma, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist about what bedding would work best for you.

Is a Microfibre Duvet Breathable?

Pretty much, but not quite as good as real cotton or feathers. The tiny hollow tubes inside make little air spaces that let heat and wetness pass through easily. The outside material is where microfibre feels a bit warmer when it touches your skin.

If you get too hot at night, three easy things can help. Get a lower tog rating than you think you'll need. Go with the 4.5 tog when it's summer. And put a cotton duvet cover on your duvet, since cotton feels cooler than fake materials. It's just a small change, but it really makes your bed feel better.

How to Wash a Microfibre Duvet

Our microfibre duvets are machine washable and suitable for a cool tumble dry. A few habits keep them looking and feeling good.

Check the label first: Then use a large-capacity machine if you have access to one. A duvet crammed into a small drum won't rinse properly.

Keep it gentle: A delicate cycle and a mild detergent do the job. We'd steer clear of fabric softener, which coats the fibres and can flatten the loft.

Dry it completely: Cool tumble, with a couple of dryer balls if you have them, and a good shake halfway through. Never store it damp. That's what causes the musty smell people blame on the duvet itself.

Wash only when needed: Most households find once or twice a year enough, as long as the duvet lives inside a cover you wash every week or two. Fewer washes is easier on the fibres, and better for the planet too.

Fluff it daily: A quick shake in the morning keeps the filling spread and the loft up.

How to Choose the Best Microfibre Duvet

"Best" depends on the bed it's going on. A short checklist helps:

  • Tog: match it to your bedroom and how warm you sleep, not the coldest night you can remember.
  • Size: measure the mattress, then decide whether to size up.
  • Filling: look for a high-loft fibre that springs back when you press it. Flat, sparse fill is the mark of a budget duvet.
  • Outer fabric: a smooth, tightly woven cover keeps the filling in and feels better against the skin.
  • Care label: confirm it's machine washable before you buy.
  • Returns: check the policy. Ours covers regular-priced items for 30 days.
